The UACJ Group is thankful for the earth and the abundance of life it supports. That feeling underlies our basic stance on the environment, and we have publicly declared our aim to reduce our environmental burden in all aspects of our business activities.
The economic activities of humankind are now of such a scale that they are having enormous impacts on the global environment and giving rise to various problems, including extreme weather, imbalances in ecosystems, and depletion of natural resources. These are sustainability risks for the UACJ Group and ultimately for the earth. Our basic stance on the environment, therefore, is to ascertain what we can do to lower our environmental burden and then work steadily to achieve what is possible.
Fiscal 2019 Key Objectives and Results
|Fiscal 2019 Objective||Fiscal 2019 Performance||Assessment||Fiscal 2020 Objective|
|Elimination of Serious Environmental Accidents||Zero accidents||1 accident||×||Zero accidents|
|Measures to Fight Global Warming||Reduction of energy used per unit of production||1.3% increase per unit of production compared to fiscal 2017 (0.3% decrease vs. fiscal 2018)||×||1% reduction in energy used per unit of production compared to fiscal 2019|
|Realization of a Recycling-Oriented Society||Reduction of waste generated per unit of production||13.0% increase per unit of production compared to fiscal 2017 (0.5% decrease vs. fiscal 2018)||×||Reduction of waste generated per unit of production compared to fiscal 2019|
|Chemical Substance Control||Reduction of controlled chemical substances||4.0% decrease in transfers and releases of controlled chemical substances compared to fiscal 2018||○||Reduction of controlled chemical substances|
Looking to the Future
In fiscal 2019, production volume declined due to the October 2019 increase in Japan’s consumption tax rate and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning in February 2020. Despite that this caused energy usage and industrial waste generation to decline relative to fiscal 2018 on a per-unit-of-production basis, objectives in these areas were not met. We did, however, meet our objectives for transfers and releases of controlled chemical substances.
In fiscal 2020, we are retaining the objective of zero major accidents. For energy usage and industrial waste generation, we have set new objectives. Regarding the former, we will seek to reduce energy usage per unit of production by 1% over the medium-to-long term compared to fiscal 2019. For the latter, our objective is to reduce industrial waste generation per unit of production relative to the actual result for fiscal 2019. Zero emissions will no longer be treated as a daily management item. As for promoting the recyclability of aluminum products, activities along themes established by individual business locations will be continued.
